Learning Paths Are In Beta. Behavior May Be Unstable. Functionality Will Change Without Notice. Use At Your Own Risk!

Get started with the Learning Paths User Guide here.

Learning Paths are in essence Modules, but supercharged. They are designed to help Users to flow through a set of interconnected learning modules, tests, homework, etc. in a linear flow.

Introduction

Learning Paths is a module creation system that allows you to build structured, multi-section learning content with enhanced organization and learner experience capabilities. This system replaces the traditional single-page module approach with a sectioned structure that supports landing pages, progress tracking, and hierarchical content organization.

Important: This is an MVP behind a feature flag. Do not create production modules or add to critical enrollments. Functionality is limited and may change in future releases.

A Learning Paths module creates structured learning experiences that guide Users through organized sections of content. You can populate all types of content via Learning Paths modules. When Users complete sections, their progress is tracked and they are guided to the next section automatically.

What To Know

The current Learning Paths implementation is an MVP, meaning you will be testing foundational pieces while many components remain in development. This module creation process operates behind a feature flag. Your feedback is essential - we emphasize openness to honest thoughts about what works, what doesn't, and what meets your specific needs.

You should not create real modules that need completion by end users with the new builder yet. The functionality is limited and could change in future releases. Similarly, avoid adding modules created with the new builder into enrollments that matter to you.

Getting Started

When creating a module, after selecting the specific role, you receive a pop-up modal offering two distinct paths. Choose Use Classic Builder to maintain the existing workflow unchanged, or select Try New Builder to access the Learning Paths interface with enhanced organization capabilities.

New Builder Interface

The new module builder page contains familiar components along with new organizational features. The right panel allows you to update the module thumbnail image, schedule activation and deactivation dates, and apply Merits. The Module Label panel enables you to select a label for your content, which helps organize training materials more effectively.

A new interface feature includes an icon at the top of the panel that collapses the side panel to provide more workspace. You can also use the gear icon at the top of the page to expand or collapse the right panel.

To title the module, click the pencil icon next to the default title area. This opens a modal where you can enter both a title and description, then click Save.

Table of Contents

The default layout includes a Table of Contents on the left side panel. You can determine whether to include a Landing Page for your module - think of this as a cover page that Users see when they start. Landing Pages are included by default but can be disabled by toggling the option to off. When disabled, the Landing Page panels remain visible to you during creation but will not appear for Users.

Landing Page Configuration

The Landing Page offers several areas where you can configure and add information to enhance the learner experience.

Cover Image Management

You can upload a cover image for the Landing Page by clicking Upload Cover Image. This opens options to either upload a new image from your computer or select an existing image from your Media Library.

Instructor's Notes

The Instructor's Notes panel allows you to add information such as instructions, prerequisites, or other helpful guidance for Users. Click the pencil icon and start entering content directly into the space.

Overview Panel

The Overview panel is where you can add information such as expected completion time, number of videos, and other details useful for Users. By default, the Time to Complete and Video fields are included. To edit this information or add more fields, click the Add/Edit link.

This opens a modal where you can enable additional fields such as the number of Tests, Homework assignments, and Observation Checklists. Once a field is enabled, a corresponding input field appears where you can enter the appropriate number.

Building Content

Start building your module by clicking the Build Module/Course/Learning Path button. The button name reflects the label you applied to the content. When clicked, a section is added to the module. Think of a section as a container that holds all the different pieces of content - it's the primary organizational unit within Learning Paths.

Sections can have their own landing page, which can be enabled by turning the toggle on or off. Just like the landing page for the entire module, a section landing page allows you to configure information about that specific section.

Once the section landing page is configured, you can start adding content to the section by clicking the + icon at the bottom. All of the familiar module building blocks are available - videos, documents, tests, homework, observation checklists, and other content types.

Adding and Managing Sections

The Learning Paths builder supports adding as many sections as needed. To add a new section, click +Add Section in the Table of Contents panel. Navigate between sections by clicking through each section listed in the Table of Contents.

To delete or reorder sections, click the trash can icon to delete a section you no longer need, or use the parallel line icon to drag and rearrange sections into your preferred order.

Learner Experience

Users interact with modules created with the Learning Path builder through a modernized interface featuring clear navigation and progress tracking.

When a User starts a module, they land on the landing page (if you created one) where they receive the information you entered during setup. At the top of the module are two main navigation tabs: the Overview page and the Content page.

The Overview page serves as a home base where the landing page information is kept for Users to reference. It also provides a progress tracker visible in the left panel. The Content page is where Users access the actual learning materials. The various sections are listed along the left-hand side, each with individual progress trackers.

If a section has a landing page, it appears at the top of each section when Users navigate to it. Content you added to the section appears beneath the section landing page. Once a User completes one section, they see a Continue button which takes them to the next section.

Content Piece Integration

For many content pieces, Users are taken to the older view for interaction. For example, if you add a test to the Learning Path, the user interacts with the Learning Path in its new view, but when they take the test, it displays in the old content viewer. This mixed experience is part of the MVP nature, with full integration planned for future releases.

July Release Enhancements

Subsections

The introduction of subsections allows you to group learning materials within a section when you want more granular organization. Subsections are nested inside of a section and can be configured with all the elements available to build out module content.

Like sections, subsection titles can be customized to reflect their specific content or learning objectives. However, unlike sections, subsections do not have their own dedicated landing pages. For Users, subsections appear in the Table of Contents, and they move through each subsection sequentially before advancing to the next section.

Interface Improvements

The system includes an option in the Table of Contents panel to disable the Landing Page by default each time you start creating content. Under the Section Overview panel, you have the option to display the number of sections Users can expect. When enabled, the system automatically recognizes and updates the section count.

The system also features a Section Summary component. Every section receives a space on the Landing Page where Users can get a quick overview of each section. Titles are automatically populated from section titles, and you can upload specific images and add additional information for each section summary.

Enhanced Media Views

This release introduces a new view of existing module elements - Tests, Observation Checklists, Flashcards, and Homework. Users interact with these elements directly within the module interface, maintaining the cohesive Learning Paths experience. When Users complete the content, they can quickly navigate back to the main module content page by clicking Return to Module.

Data Storage and Technical Details

Learning Paths modules are stored in the existing modules table with type differentiation. Original modules have a type column value of null. The main Learning Path functions as a wrapper and has type = LP. Sections and subsections have type = 'LPS'.

System Limitations

The builder is managed by the Manage Modules and Manage New Builder Modules roles. The impersonate functionality does not work with the builder. The system currently provides a mixed experience where some content pieces use the Learning Path interface while others revert to legacy views.

AI-Powered Translations

Learning Paths support AI-powered translations of module text and content items into other enabled languages. See AI Translations in Learning Paths for full details on setup, supported fields, and the translation workflow.

If you add new translatable content to a module that's already been translated, a New Content banner lets you know there's untranslated content to address so your translations stay complete across every enabled language.

Flashcard Behavior

Flashcards in Learning Paths shuffle questions on each retry, matching the behavior found in Classic Modules. Every time a User retries a set of flashcards, the deck shuffles to a new random order.

Reference Modules

When you add a Reference Module to a Learning Path, it no longer applies a progress tracker or a required tag. Reference Modules behave as reference material, with nothing to complete and no progress to track.

Upcoming Features

Enhanced gating features are in development, including visibility into content that exists beyond a gate and implicit gating between sections with possible configuration options. New UX/UI improvements for content pieces like tests, homework, and observation checklists will create a more cohesive experience throughout the Learning Paths system.
